May - Breaking the Stigma: Understanding Mental Health and Promoting Wellness

Updated: Jul 19, 2024

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an important time to discuss, de-stigmatise, and promote understanding about mental health. At The Staybl, we believe in the power of awareness to transform perceptions and empower individuals. This month, we’ll delve into the essentials of mental health, explore common misconceptions, and share strategies for maintaining mental wellness.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act in daily life. It also determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Breaking down the stigma starts with understanding that mental health issues are not a sign of weakness but are as real as physical health issues.

Common Misconceptions about Mental Health:

1. Myth: Mental health problems are rare.

Fact: Mental health conditions are more common than many people realise, with millions of people worldwide experiencing mental health issues at some point in their lives.

2. Myth: People with mental health issues can’t work.

Fact: People with mental health problems are just as productive as other employees. Employers who support mental health see a return in terms of positive work environment and increased employee retention.

3. Myth: Young people just go through phases.

Fact: Early mental health support can help prevent more serious health issues in the future. It’s important to take mental health seriously, regardless of age.

Strategies for Promoting Mental Wellness:

1. Talk About It:

• Normalise discussing mental health the same way we discuss physical health. Open conversations can lead to greater understanding and support.

2. Stay Connected:

• Keep in touch with friends and family. Supportive relationships are key to mental health.

3. Develop Coping Skills:

• Engage in activities that reduce stress and increase your resilience. This could include meditation, reading, or outdoor activities.

4. Seek Professional Help:

• Don’t hesitate to seek help from a mental health professional. Therapy is a tool that is useful for the preventive and therapeutic treatment of mental illness.

At The Staybl, we are committed to supporting a community where open, honest discussions about mental health are not only encouraged but normalised. Let’s take this month to advocate for mental wellness, support those who are struggling, and educate ourselves and others about the importance of mental health.
